About jLix
What's in a name?
'jLix' [ˈdʒeɪlɪks] is an abbreviation of 'JavaScript Library Extensions', although for the moment 'jQuery Library Extensions' would be more accurate. 'jLix' also stands for 'JavaScript/jQuery Licks'. And just like guitar licks: you can't have enough of them in your repertoire.
Note for web standardistas
As 'jLix' is most of all just a name and because it has an ambiguous meaning, it should not be marked up as an abbreviation or acronym ;)
Extensions, not widgets
A lot of extensions for JavaScript libraries come in the form of widgets that change or set all kinds of style properties through JavaScript. This is probably the best option for animations, but the prefered method for anything else is seperation of behaviour and style. Therefore, instead of altering style properties directly through JavaScript, jLix extensions tend to manipulate the DOM, setting classNames or other attribute values in order to provide hooks for CSS selectors.
Who?
jLix is a little project of Sander Aarts, front-end developer from the Lowlands with an increasing interest in JavaScript, member of Fronteers [lang="nl"], the Dutch association of front-end developers and (double) bass player in a couple of bands.
During 2008 I finally started using a Javascript library at work. jQuery was the library of choice and I must say I love it. I guess there are other libraries that are better equipped for building hardcore web applications, but for the more ordinary DOM manipulation, like interface enhancements, jQuery is just great I think.
